My first exposure to online publications was in school. Even though we always had the choice to buy text-books in the store, many of the professors put their publications online as well. Doing this would save the pupils money and let them access the books from any PC in the school. This meant that you never had to carry around your text-books - a major advantage after a semester of slogging through the snow.
At first, I wasn't very into publications online. I couldn't get into it, you see. It just did not feel right to me. I like to be able to unwind with a book, holding it in my hand and flipping the pages. I could tell where things were located and remember the pages by their location. With the publication online, you can't do any of those things. It strains your eyes, requires you to sit up-right in the same pose for hour after hour, and is quite hard to flip your way all the way through. I also like audio books on CD, though.

I had already started to buy books on-line for almost every use. I bought sports books online, text-books online - you name it. Not only did the web let me buy printed books inexpensively, but it also let me access many things that were out-of-print.
Reading books on line isn't truly that good for contemporary literature which you can buy inside the store. You may as well either buy it or borrow it from the library, or listen to it, with books on cd. The great thing about publications on-line, however, is that you can often find quite old ones with only a little trouble. Resources such as Project Gutenberg allow you to get into the great classics of writing from all times and places all over the world. As long as it is no longer copy protected, you can legally put the publication on-line.
Of course, the area where books on-line have the best advantage of all is with audio publications. The awesome thing about audio books on-line is that it is so much more expedient than having to borrow them from the library or go to an audio book shop. Instead, you can just download them to your PC and listen to them at your convenience. If you want to take them with you, you can place them on an iPod or burn them on Disc. Audio books on-line make total sense.
