A Young Man's Irresponsible Drinking Results In A DWI And Time In The County Jail

Richard had an extremely difficult time maintaining a job. Indeed, due to his inactivity and lack of drive, he was without a job far more frequently than he was in work. And when he did land a job, he had an extremely difficult time getting to work when his shift began, he typically received less than acceptable performance reviews, and he called off sick so often that he usually got fired three or four weeks after he started working.

Not unexpectedly, one of the outcomes of Richard's poor employment track record was the fact that he was virtually without a dime most of the time. In spite of Richard's appalling work history and financial disregard, however, somehow he made it a point to drink in a hazardous and abusive manner most of the time.

So it came as no big surprise when Richard got arrested for a third DUI. When he went to court, the judge told Richard that his alcohol-related conduct was disgraceful and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eight months locked up in jail.

During his time behind bars, Richard was required to learn more about alcohol facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the demoralizing results of careless drinking, and he was required to get alcohol rehab. The judge highlighted the fact that unless Richard receives professional alcohol treatment and learns how to live an alcohol-free life, he will most likely be spending a lot more time in jail.

Richard articulated that he understood what the judge was pronouncing but he still felt that jail was not the most realistic ruling. The judge disagreed and stated that it was his obligation to keep alcohol abusers off the streets who drive under the influence and who receive a DUI. To give credibility to this perspective, the magistrate quoted some venerable, comprehensively researched alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that pointed to some of the disruptive effects that are linked to careless drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Even though Richard understood that he drank in a hazardous manner, he never thought that he was a person who was dependent on alcohol. So it was a rude awakening when Richard started to experience chronic alcoholism symptoms and signs and alcohol withdrawals about two-and-a-half hours after getting locked up in the municipal jail.

To monitor his alcohol withdrawals in a safe and secure manner, Richard was taken to an alcohol rehab hospital for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to the county jail. While in jail Richard was given alcohol rehab but because he got this treatment as something that was imposed upon him, he was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his irresponsible and abusive drinking.

When his time behind bars was completed, the magistrate without hesitation told Richard that he would be under strict surveillance and would be required to take periodic alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unwillingly followed the treatment modus operandi while behind bars, the judge knew that it was only a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his abusive drinking behavior.

As the judge thought about Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never "connect the dots" and discover how to live in an accountable and productive manner.
