A Young Male Needs Counseling For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcohol And Drug Addiction Approximately eight months ago I had dinner with a forty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is dependent on drugs and alcohol. As stated by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship difficulties. As stated by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he, for all intents and purposes, has no motivation to accomplish much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish one semester of graduate school in Spanish literature. Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an example of a person who can look in the mirror and see his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets alcohol and drug addiction treatment that leads to long-term sobriety. It may be asked how rehab would help his drug and alcohol addiction. First of all, there are quite a few newly discovered doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism. Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is utterly nothing helpful about drug abuse and careless and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the road to deteriorating health, legal problems, shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, a premature death, and financial difficulties. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him cope with these conditions more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested. Since Benjamin doesn't have the resolve to do much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he desperately needs some hope for a healthier existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he needs for his intense depression and addiction and adhere to his treatment protocol. Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs through drug and alcohol rehab and get the treatment he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with direction, self-respect, and passion. More positive relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and affirmative change are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to obtain the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his treatment program, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his life.
