A Troubled High School Student Displays Several Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Discharged From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was displaying numerous alcohol-related issues at school. For that reason, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to return to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school expulsion to his Mother and Father. His Mother and Father were "relatively conservative" and explained to Stephen that getting removed from school was not a tolerable educational option. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would more likely than not be like a lead weight around his feet that may inhibit his educational aspirations for the remainder of his adult life. Furthermore, Stephen's Mother and Father were extremely let down that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his peers in the second.

It was apparent that his parents were on the same page as Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his dialogue with his Mother and Father, Stephen finally agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next afternoon after school.

When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously looked at all of the alcohol-related issues Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related behavior made the school administrators uneasy.

Quite honestly, Stephen was unsure why the principal told him he had to see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking circumstances? In view of the fact that almost all of his peers drink as much if not more than he does, in essence, drinking is no big issue. Stated more directly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a major concern?

In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to short-circuit his ability to conduct himself like a responsible young man. As verbalized by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink wine coolers, wine, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's the appropriate behavior for you."

Luckily, Miss Pender was very well equipped for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had underlined that outlined various drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of figures and reports that applied principally to teenagers.

After Miss Pender conveyed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was clear that what Miss Pender revealed to Stephen was a real jolt to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to articulate the long term and the short term results of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also made the effort to back up what she was saying with alcoholism and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everyone in general, and principally to adolescents.

In actual fact, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen at once understood why he should not be engaging in hazardous and excessive drinking with or without his friends any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she went over and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
