A High School Student Drinks Excessively With His Buddies, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Learns That Learning Something In Class Can Make A Difference

Andy was a high school ninth grader who regularly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a daring personality and frequently wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The essential drawback with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result legally allowed to operate a truck or car and to ingest alcohol.

Andy, conversely, had a tough time grasping the fact that as a fifteen-year-old adolescent he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, conversely, Andy often drank with his high school friends after school, largely on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his cronies was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some wine coolers, beer, and wine, Andy and all of his buddies went to a park and drank for about two or three hours.

After drinking something like eight glasses of wine, Andy started to feel woozy and then vomited. When he lost consciousness on the outdoor basketball court, one of his guy friends called 911 for help. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms. Simply put, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite shocked to realize that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had roughly five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he articulated this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, on the other hand, the healthcare practitioner informed Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour time frame could certainly be quite a bit more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare practitioner further verbalized how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this takes place, an individual can perish.

This was the first forewarning to Andy that he was drinking in a harmful fashion and that there are costs for such activities. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost lost his life from alcohol poisoning the previous night.

The healthcare practitioner also spoke to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol therapy for Andy. His parents were delighted that Andy was out of harm's way and informed the physician that they would look into getting Andy alcohol rehabilitation.

While speaking to his parents, Andy informed them that there must be a special reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous week in Mr. Johnson's health class.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was teaching didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Since he almost died, conversely, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go to Mr. Johnson's classroom and express regret to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to a topic that was as relevant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
